Babies grow at an astonishing pace — some outfits barely get worn. Knowing how to pick the right size saves money, wardrobe space and frustration (yours and gift-givers’).
In short
- Choose by baby’s weight and height, not just the age on the label.
- Buy few newborn pieces: many babies move to 0–3 months within weeks.
- If in doubt, size up — loose clothes fit, tight ones don’t.
- For gifts, choose 3–6 months or bigger.
Baby clothes size chart
Figures are approximate — every brand has its own measurements, so always check the label.
| Size | Approx. age | Weight | Height |
|---|---|---|---|
| Newborn | 0 – 1 month | up to 4 kg | up to 56 cm |
| 0–3 months | 1 – 3 months | 4 – 6 kg | 56 – 62 cm |
| 3–6 months | 3 – 6 months | 6 – 8 kg | 62 – 68 cm |
| 6–9 months | 6 – 9 months | 8 – 9 kg | 68 – 74 cm |
| 9–12 months | 9 – 12 months | 9 – 10 kg | 74 – 80 cm |
| 12–18 months | 1 – 1.5 years | 10 – 11.5 kg | 80 – 86 cm |
| 18–24 months | 1.5 – 2 years | 11.5 – 13 kg | 86 – 92 cm |
Why not choose by age alone?
Two babies of the same age can be very different sizes. A baby born at 4 kg may never wear newborn clothes. That’s why weight and height are the best guide — length matters especially for bodysuits and sleepsuits, which pull at the shoulders and nappy.
How many pieces at each stage?
| Item | Newborn | 0–3 months | 3–6 months |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bodysuits | 4–6 | 6–8 | 6–8 |
| Sleepsuits | 4–6 | 6 | 4–6 |
| Trousers or leggings | 2–3 | 4 | 4 |
| Cardigans | 1–2 | 2–3 | 2 |
| Socks / booties | 4 pairs | 6 pairs | 6 pairs |
In a hot climate like Mozambique’s, babies get messy and sweaty: more light pieces beat a few thick ones. More tips in our baby layette guide.
Tips for getting the size right
- Choose cotton — it’s cool, soft and breathable. Wash before use: some pieces shrink slightly.
- Side-opening or envelope-neck bodysuits make changes much easier in the early months, like our cotton baby bodysuit.
- Elastic-waist leggings and trousers grow with your baby — see our cotton baby leggings.
- Feet: before walking, babies don’t need stiff shoes. Socks and soft crochet booties keep feet warm without squeezing.
- Think about the season: if baby will wear 6–9 months in winter, choose long sleeves for that stage.
Buying a gift?
Everyone gives newborn! Choose 3–6, 6–9 months or bigger — mum will thank you later. Accessories like baby bibs and headbands last much longer. More ideas in newborn gift ideas.
